Berly:

Welcome to denim wrapped nightmares tipsy exchange Podcast where we explore the supernatural series episode by episode.

LA:

over drinks, we'll discuss the lore of gore and what we adore about the Winchesters and their adventures.

Berly:

I'm burly, and I'm a new fan of the series. I'm

LA:

LA, and I'm here along for the ride. Now let's get tipsy.

Berly:

Hello, la Hello Burley. Our last episode was titled, I believe the children are the future. In the episode, Sam and Dean investigated a series of odd deaths that strangely seemed to resemble fairy tales or urban legends. The brothers tracked down an 11 year old boy named Jesse, played by Gatlin Griffith. They realized that Jesse, his beliefs were coming true within a two mile radius. Castiel showed up and told Sam and Dean, we gotta kill that kid. hilarity ensued. Not really. But Jesse lived to see another day,

LA:

all the way to Australia.

Berly:

No, they can't. They don't know where he is. So Oh, that's right. It's impossible. He cannot be found disappeared.

LA:

Today's episode is called The Curious Case of Dean Winchester. And it is the seventh episode of season five and it aired on October 29 2009. He sees them. We start out there's a woman on her couch reading a newspaper kind of looks like a National Enquirer type. Yeah. And on the front, it says the apocalypse is here. And she's chuckling at some

Berly:

she thought was hilarious.

LA:

Her husband comes in bussen and she's like, uh, he'll just like books it for the stairs.

Berly:

I thought he was carrying something at first, but he was just hunched over, I guess holding his arm because he was Oh, no having a heart attack or something. Who knows?

LA:

Yeah, he just looks it up there. And she's like, Yeah, hey, honey, nice to see you too. And he goes straight to the sink. And I guess he's trying to like rent a space or something. But the whole time he's there. His skin starting to shrivel. He's like, lifts his head. He's lost a ton of hair, lifts this face up. And he's just like an old man. I don't know where

Berly:

his eyes like went, Whoa, yeah. Cataract filmed over. Yeah.

LA:

And he kind of like stumbles backwards. balls into this little arm or thing or whatever. And just falls over and dies. And she comes up. She stopped up those years. You pointed out she

Berly:

had, like, clogs or something. They were real noisy.

LA:

She was real heavy footed. But she got up there saw him and just screamed. But then we're with the boys posing as CDC agents. And they're talking to the medical examiner and I thought it was funny. She was like, You really expect me to believe you guys are CDC, which I was like, oh, their covers blow. But she says like, normally they have to wait forever for them to show up. Which not very comforting, right? They're there to view the body of the guy that died in the beginning. And she's like reading, reading off the sheet. He's he was born April 3 1984. Which means in the show, he's 25 years old. She opens up the what is it? Ziploc bag? No, the No. The body bag? The body body bag. Yeah. And they see it's an old man. They're like, Are you sure? And she says she checked the DNA and everything like double checked everything. And it's definitely am yeah.

Berly:

She's like, I don't know what to tell you. He's a 25 year old male who died of old age.

LA:

Yeah. Crazy. So Dean calls Bobby, to confirm that he was right about that. I guess Bobby had brought this to them. And he they were like, you're right. It's definitely something that we need to look into. And Bobby suggests that they check out any of the missing persons that might be in town to see if there's any kind of connection. Dean actually, like? I've been kind of wondering like, if they check in on Bobby, like how he's doing. And Dean actually does ask him how he's doing kind of just generally, how are you doing?

Berly:

And we find out why they probably don't ask him all that often with the response that they get. Yeah,

LA:

does it what does he say? He's like, Oh, yeah, I'm just crying and mahogany DOS, or something like that. Then hangs up on him.

Berly:

Call them an eejit. Oh,

LA:

yeah.

Berly:

Yeah. Yeah. Very, very grumpy. I wouldn't be too What is it like aren't right? Yeah.

LA:

They okay. So they go to interview a wife of one of the missing people that Bobby mentioned they should look into and she's shows him a photo of her husband and of course, he's an old man. She said she knew she thought something was wrong because he keeps a pretty tight schedule, but he always didn't. She said he always comes home late like One like Tuesday nights or something.

Berly:

And while she's talking, Sam is looking at a picture and zoomed in on his forearm where there was a tattoo. So we were both like ah, noted, that's going to be important at some point, right.

LA:

And Dean is searching the house while Sam talks to the lady. He's looking for some clues, and he discovers a receipt from mme loot, lose Golden Palace, and the guy's jacket. So of course, they go there, and they find the room that cliff had the receipt for. They're about to pick the lock, but they hear somebody yelling on the other side of the door, so they just, yeah, yeah, so they just bust it down. And there's this good looking young chap with this one lady next to him, and then another one pops out from underneath the sheets are all in bed together. They think they have the wrong room until Sam sees the tattoo that he saw on the picture. And they asked him if he happens to know Cliff Whitlow. And of course, he tries to deny it, but Sam takes the guy's wallet. And it's cliff. It's his ID. And let's not

Berly:

forget that Dean felt it was necessary to go and lift up the covers. To forget about that take a look at this guy is full on naked body to find a birthmark that the wife had apparently told them about. Yeah, in order to further identify this gentleman as Cliff, when he went and ripped up the covers. I thought he was going to see if the guy had a big dick. And that's why there were two girls in the bed.

LA:

Okay,

Berly:

I didn't I didn't was like, yeah, just we didn't hear the conversation around the bride. That would

LA:

have been a little helpful. I've recognized that a little better.

Berly:

Like the only reason we do that is because he was like, Oh, there's the birthmark your wife told us about? And then I was like, Oh,

LA:

okay. Or was that a lie? Just so we could look. I was real confused.

Berly:

I was like, what's happening?

LA:

Well, Cliff begs him not to tell his wife. He

Berly:

was like she's dead as far as I'm done as far as she knows.

LA:

And Sam and Dean are like, Okay, well, we won't tell her but you gotta tell us. How did this happen? How are you looking like you are? Cliff tells them that he won a poker game at this bar against a guy, an Irish guy named Patrick. Imagine that. An Irish guy named Patrick, what are the so the guys split up to school and scour the town and the bars. What a tough job. And Dean hits this one place and bribes bartender for 100 bucks. The bartender wasn't budgeted first. He's like, Dude, I don't know if a game like this is a bar. But he passes them $100 and tells him to go around back. And that the game there's a poker game. But as he's about to go into the door, Bobby comes rolling out. And jeans like well, what the hell? He asks him if he stopped the game because he had called Bobby I think an updated him right as to where they were in the investigation. And Bobby is like, he's like, No one stopped the game. And he doesn't want to admit it at first, but Dean keeps pressing him and Bobby played the game. And he lost 25 years. So right in front of Dean's eyes. He ages 25 years.

Berly:

The makeup on Bobby was really good.

LA:

It was Yeah. Dean is pissed. Oh, yeah, tells Bobby He's an idiot. And Bobby does not like that tone or him telling him he's an idiot. He tells him that these are his years and he'll do with him what he chooses. Back in the bar. We meet Patrick. Good luck and Patrick gray. Great Irish accent. Great suits. Yeah. And he is talking to a couple and talking about how he he's just great. He's he can read people. The lady he's talking to is very pretty. I forget what he says to her. But we see her again later.

Berly:

Just kind of being seductive with her talking about how she's a woman who likes adventure, things like that. Was

LA:

that what he said? Yeah, okay. Well, as he's flirting, Dean walks up and says you need to talk to him and just kind of quickly flashes his pistol that's underneath his jacket. And perhaps was like, Oh, hey, Bob. Yeah, let's go talk. Dean wants him to give Bobby back his years. Like you've just do that. Just because he asked

Berly:

nicely with his gun.

LA:

He threatens Patrick that he'll shoot him. But Patrick says, you know, go ahead. That's about time. He got a little tickle. Needs a little tickle, nice little pickled tickle. Okay, that's nice. But and he says no, he's not gonna give Bobby's years back. But if Dean wants it to play for his years to give them back to Bobby. He's all he's game. So of course, Dane agrees. And he does end up cashing out and getting Bobby's 25 years back, and it was very nicely done between him being old and and getting young again. Yeah,

Berly:

I agree. Edgar, I liked the whole thing with that. chips to. Oh, yeah that they like a fire. Yeah. And then the ash blowing over toward Bobby.

LA:

Oh, yeah, he did some sort of little incantation over the chips. And then they blew to give Bobby back his years. It was really cool. Yeah, Sam is back at the motel room and he's bringing food back for Dean. And this old man comes out of the bathroom. We learned that that is Dean because he really didn't didn't didn't say how many years he lost, did they?

Berly:

I mean, he lost at least 25 Because he didn't win back the 25 years from Bobby. Yeah, he took out 25 years for himself as well. So I think he last 50 years. That's

LA:

what it was like the Biden was 25 and he went to 50. I think he was

Berly:

supposed to be 75 Maybe 80. Yep, he was up there. The actor did really well with imitating Jensen. Ackles Dean Winchester perform it. Yes. He didn't look like an old Dean to me. But he captured Dean Winchester really well, the way he spoke, how he chose to enunciate words, the physicality he chose. I really liked how the actor performed it. Yeah,

LA:

I agree. Bobby shows up. And they conclude that

Berly:

the bobby magically kicks in the door. Oh, yeah. You're

LA:

You're upset about that. That door flew open.

Berly:

And he was immediately rolling in. Like, there was not enough time for hand to move from doorknob to wheelchair explained. How did that door Oh, no.

LA:

Mommy's got tricks. I don't know.

Berly:

All you got tricks, man.

LA:

So the three of them conclude that the poker chips must be the key to how this guy can like, take these years from people. That housekeeper comes in as they're leaving. And of course, even older Dean has to stop and flirt with her. And she's she's like, Oh, you're adorable.

Berly:

You remind me of my grandmother.

LA:

I don't think you'd like that too much. He

Berly:

was like, I'm dangerous. And she was like, Of course you are.

LA:

It was funny. It was cute. The three of them are tailing Patrick. They're following him and they see him get just like slammed by a car. Like and I think it didn't show his neck was broken.

Berly:

It did zoomed in to show that there's like bone sticking out of his

LA:

neck. Yeah. And the driver gets out to go get somebody to call an ambulance and whatnot. And Patrick just gets up and takes the car gets in the car just drives off.

Berly:

Dean was like, Man, I like this guy's style. He's pretty smooth. Yeah.

LA:

They follow him to a fancy high rise apartment and sneak in. The elevator is out of order. So Bobby can't go up. Unfortunately, that I think Dean ends up calling this guy he which?

Berly:

Yeah, all right. Yeah, they've decided he's a wit. Yeah.

LA:

And Dean struggles to get up the stairs because he's an old man. It's old Dean. Sam's giving them shit about it. Which I mean, you

Berly:

know, they got to the second floor and Dean was struggling. And Sam pointed at the stairs. But I mean, the room they went to was 3701. I was like, Are they on the 37th floor? Hopefully it was the third luxury high rise building the elevators out of order? I don't think so.

LA:

Yeah, they would have to get something. Yeah. That'd be fixed real fast. Plus, they, they would have to have like a freight elevator or some things people can use instead. Yeah,

Berly:

just saying in Sam looked real winded by the time they came out of the stairwell. You know.

LA:

It's important it is it's very, very important to the story. As they're poking around. Delicious apartment. Yeah. Dean finds a safe and says it's like some dorm store model to piece of cake. He starts trying to break in, but he can't because he doesn't have a young man's touch or eyes or ears. So Sam takes over of course, gets it open, no big deal. As soon as he opens it, there is the woman from the bar from earlier that Patrick was reading and and kind of flirting with she uses telekinesis to restrain them. And Patrick comes in and he's like, no, no, no, no, no, don't harm him. You know, they're, they're harmless. And he explains to them that the chips don't matter. The chips are just plywood and showmanship. Nothing about the chips. It's the incantations and he tells them that he is a 900 year old witch. And he looks good. Yeah.

Berly:

He's a rookie.

LA:

I enjoyed watching him.

Berly:

I enjoyed listening. Yes, yeah.

LA:

Well, Dean is up to go another round because he wants his years back. But Patrick says know that it'd be too easy that he would end up dying because he's already old. If he lost and he wants Sam to play but Dean Dean, of course says no. Patrick says that he can't let Sam leave without a parting gift and I think he claps his hand three Times, and nothing happens. So they're confused. But when they're walking out of the building, Sam has an issue and his pants. And Dean says that he thinks he gave him the clap.

Berly:

We find out later that was true. Yes. Next day

LA:

Sam wants to play. He wants to play the game to get Dean's years back.

Berly:

Dana and Bobby are both like you're not good enough, like straight up. But like Dean is like, you're not as good as me. And I lost and I'm not as good as Bobby and he lost. So you're bound to lose, which I mean, I get where they were coming from, but it still felt a little harsh.

LA:

Yeah, Bobby ends up having a meltdown. And saying that he's got no reason to live that he probably would have killed himself. If he wasn't a coward. Such a coward by now.

Berly:

He was saying, you know, what do I have to look forward to the apocalypse? Like, I'm not even a fucking Hunter anymore. I'm watching my friends get hurt, and I can't do anything to help them. Yeah, he's just feeling helpless. It really, it got to me this little scene, I teared up,

LA:

the guys are pretty taken aback by this. And Sam says that he is not going to allow Bobby to play again. And that there has to be another way. So he leaves to go figure things out. Dean and Bobby go back to the motel room. And Patrick's girl is there. I guess her name was Leah. I never caught that many there. And she's waiting for them and has a piece of paper and hands it over to Bobby and says that it's the most powerful reversal spell that you that there is out there. It will restore everyone who isn't dead back to their original condition that Patrick has changed, including herself and Patrick. Bobby points out that her giving them this information doesn't make sense. And she says that she has her reasons. And then she has this little locket on that she kind of handles I guess that's whatever it is part of her reasoning. And she leaves. Sam ends up going to meet Patrick to play. And when he's walking in, he sees that Patrick is playing this old man and the old man is about to go in for another round. But Patrick tells him You know you're already up 13 years. Why don't we kind of call it a day and the guy seems pretty okay with it and thankful and takes off, which we find very odd. Yeah, because we thought he was just there to take people's lives.

Berly:

He said something about how the man was going to live to see His granddaughter's Bar Mitzvah.

LA:

I was just like, oh, we see old Dean and he's with Bobby They're in a graveyard in Dean is digging up a grave. And Bobby is watching,

Berly:

watching, criticizing, giving Dean massive telling him that sciatica you'll be fine. Like keep digging princess.

LA:

Poor Dean's hurtin these aching. Bones. Bones aren't what they used to be. Oh, man,

Berly:

I tell you what, I really empathize with this episode, man. I was like, that's how I feel every morning. Yikes. years of my life sucked away.

LA:

Well, as Sam is playing poker, whatever this game is with Patrick, I don't know shit about poker. But he keeps glancing at this toothpick that Patrick keeps putting in his mouth and then putting on the table grows, by the way. And it turns out, we learned that they need some of his DNA for this spell to work. And somehow Sam snatches the toothpick goes outside I guess on a break, and hands it over to Dean goes back into play. We see Bobby start saying the incantation him and wherever him and I guess they're still are they still in the cemetery? Well, they

Berly:

came to the building so that Sam could give them the DNA.

LA:

But where are they doing the actual spell? I can't remember. After Sam sits back down. Patrick had mentioned like, oh, is this this what you meant to give your brother and he pulls out the toothpick from his pocket of his jacket. And he says, the one you gave your brother I never touched didn't touch my lips. So the spells not gonna work. Since they don't have his DNA.

Berly:

They never let us know how he knew they were trying to do the spell. Like did he do his girlfriend went and gave them the spell? Yeah.

LA:

I don't think he knew that. She gave it to him. She had to tell him remember? Oh, yeah. And

Berly:

the reason they went on the break was because she came in and interrupted the game and whispered something sexy in his ear. And he was like, we need to take a break. So she was totally in on it. So maybe he figured it out then because let's face it, Sam wasn't being all that sly about staring at the frickin toothpick. Every time it got sat down true. So maybe like because it kept getting set down and Sam was like, staring at his toothpick really intensely. And then his girlfriend comes in and it's like, you're in the middle of a game. Let's fuck. Maybe he was like, something's Something strange is going on. But you're right. She had to tell him so he didn't. How did they figure it out? Where would they have gotten this? Well, I guess they're hunters.

LA:

Yeah.

Berly:

Maybe he thought they could have found it themselves. Maybe

LA:

he's just I don't know. Good into winch intervention. Yeah, intuition. But Patrick's pissed.

Berly:

Patrick's not happy. And he starts to

LA:

do like do some Jedi shit. Yeah, on on Sam hurting him. But Leah comes over and stops him and tells him You know, no, like, I'm the one that gave them this about it. Don't take it out on him. And he's shocked. And he's like, you know why? Why would you do this? And of course she touches her locket again. It switches back over to Dean. At one point, I think after he took the toothpick from Sam, that showed him walking off kind of holding his left arm, right like you called it you said he was gonna end up having a heart attack. And Patrick says, he says he wants to start up the game again with Sam, but he tells him that, you know, good luck because Dean's about to die. Like within minutes. Dean

Berly:

is in his apartment trying to find more DNA because they found out the toothpick one shit, right? They tried to do the spell and nothing happened. So

LA:

they're playing and I again I couldn't I could tell you more suspenseful Lee how it happened if I knew poker, but

Berly:

I don't. It was a card it and then there was another card laid

LA:

down two cards and the other guy laid down two cards. They pushed some chips around.

Berly:

It was just so dramatic cards everywhere. Ultimately,

LA:

they both went all in. Patrick laid down his cards, and Leah is over on the side crying. Sam was like, you know for which you're like so nice. It's almost creepy. Like almost like you.

Berly:

She was convinced Sam was about to die. Yeah. Oh, remember Sam. Oh, Sam did bluff him earlier. And then Sam was real sweating. His neck was all glistening. What was it was real hot. He was just high pressure. So that pressure and that beta, that beta choke got him got his heart rate up. Mm hmm. Then the witch was convinced that he he got to Sam whenever he brought up Dean. He was like, Oh, I bring up your brother. And you're just an emotional wreck. You can't even focus at all. Can you? The two witches were convinced Sam Sam was booked. And I think she felt bad because she felt like she put him there. Yeah.

LA:

Well, Sam wins. With four, four of a kind, whatever that means. We see Bobby Bobby had been on the phone trying to reach Dean calling him as he was dying on the floor. I don't know why I'm laughing. But as he's like yelling into the phone, Dean comes prance and out of the building his good looking young self again. It goes back to Leah and Patrick and she tells him that she's done. She wants to play him because she's ready to go. She opens the locket and there's a picture of a baby and then a picture of an old woman. And she says that she buried her daughter and that this is what she looked like. So she watched her daughter grow up, get old and die. And she tells him she misses her family. And she's over it. She puts all our chips in, they play. He puts all his chips in.

Berly:

Yeah, it was sad. They die. We just see her age.

LA:

Well, that's your age. I guess it was just her. Yeah, he didn't die. He live. Of course he did. Well, back at the motel. Sam, Dean and Bobby are all there and Sam has taken off. And Dean's asked him where he's going. He doesn't want to tell him but he says, I'm going to get a booster. Don't say anything. Don't give me shit about it. Hey, I

Berly:

mean, if you're gonna get an STD, that's the one to get. Yeah.

LA:

It can be cured. After Sam leaves, Dean apologizes to Bobby for calling him an idiot and getting mad at him about what he did. He tells him You don't stop being a soldier just because you got wounded in battle. And that you are my family. You're our family. And so, you know, we need you. There's no checking out anymore. You know, I don't want to hear that shit.

Berly:

And he kept calling them iron side. And we googled that it was a 1960s television series about Robert T iron side, a consultant for the San Francisco Police Department, who was paralyzed from the waist down after being shot while on vacation. And he was in a wheelchair. I've never heard of that. I hadn't either. That's why we had to google it. No. I was thinking it was like a Viking or something. Right?

LA:

Yeah. Well, after they're a little emotional chitchat, Bobby says they need to leave the room before they grow lady parts, which is lovely. On the way out, Dean had come in eating a burger and he kind of looks at the burger tosses it out because he knows it ain't healthy for you. And he's, he's getting older every day. And then that's it.

Berly:

Fun fact. In this episode, it is suggested that Sam is the weakest poker player among Bobby Dean and himself. Yet he is the only one of them that one against Patrick. And in real life, Jared paddle lucky won the 2006 Bodog fight celebrity poker tournament in Canada. Nice. This episode was written by Sarah gamble and Jenny Klein, and it was directed by Robert singer gore. Only thing that was gory was his neck break, I think. I mean, all the aging was sad and depressing, but I wouldn't say it was gory. And the neck thing was so quick. And there wasn't even that much blood or anything. It was just like his bone. Yeah. Not a lot of gore at all. What did you adore about this episode?

LA:

Well, I liked that Bobby kind of came clean about how he's feeling like the Dean checked him in the end. And I like that Sam won the poker game.

Berly:

Yeah, I'm happy. We got to check in with Bobby because it's been a while. Like, we knew he was really upset about his situation. And I feel like, we haven't really revisited that. Like we were we were due for that. So I'm happy they got this in.

LA:

I also

Berly:

adored Patrick. Oh, that's true. Oh my god, I forgot. Patrick, portrayed by how AWS San, he was good. There was one scene, it was both a combination of his performance and the lighting, where he went from being the slight, jovial, mischievous witch, to being angry, and he leaned forward. And he got it switched to sinister really quickly. So I enjoyed that transition. I wish they would have kept him in that sinister mode just a little bit longer because it was nice. So I enjoyed his little performance. Yeah, I wouldn't mind if he popped back up again. All right, so for lore, I want a couple of different routes based off of what the wiki lore says. First, we're looking at age manipulation spell. This is based off of what's in the supernatural wiki. An age manipulation spell is a very powerful spell originating from old Gaelic culture, it can be considered as a branch of reality warping, and Chrono Canisius. The spell was used by which Patrick to manipulate the aging process of the user and the target. So based off of that little definition, I looked into what the fuck is Chrono Kinesis Crona Kinesis is the ability to manipulate time by both accelerating and decelerating it along with halting it entirely, often mistaken with time travel Crona Kinesis mainly affects individuals perception of time. Contrarily time travel allows a person to travel forward and backward in time as a whole. When looking at these two key details of both abilities, a clear differentiation can be made between the two. Because Chrono Kinesis relates to perception of time, it can only affect a small area of both objects and surrounding people. This is due to the correlation between both space and time, individuals in the area where a user's time is being perceived differently, will still view time at its regular speed, and thus will not be able to experience any changes to it. For example, if a wielder of this power is decelerating time in order to catch a falling mug of boiling hot coffee before it hits the ground, only they will see time slow and the mugs speed drop. Once the user catches the mug, and perceives time regularly, once again, those who viewed the instant incident would justify it as quick reflexes, like The Flash. This is because they would only see the mug begin to fall and be swiftly caught. Well, I didn't think that that seemed right. So then I Googled Gaelic aging curse. And I found some depressing stuff. Oh, great. So research has revealed that hemochromatosis a genetic condition, which causes more than a million Americans to absorb too much iron from their diets is a much more serious cause of disease and disability than previously thought. The upside is that the condition is easy to detect and treat him Moke Roma ptosis symptoms such as fatigue and muscle and joint pains are easily confused as part of typical aging, and the disease often goes undetected until the damage is done. Known in Ireland as the Celtic curse. The disease is common in Northern Europe, one in 300. US non Hispanic whites have two copies of the mutated gene and about 10% are carriers women are less at risk for the condition until later in life, since they lose iron naturally through menstruation and childbearing. The good news is that hemochromatosis can be detected through medical tests and treated by blood withdraws. Researchers hope that this increased awareness of the scope of the problem can help lead to increased testing and treatment, which should improve quality of life and reduce frailty and disability rates for those with genetic risk to hemo Chroma ptosis anyone with family history of the condition should talk to their doctor and consider being tested if they are experiencing severe fatigue, unexplained cirrhosis, joint pain, arthritis, diabetes, heart problems, or erectile dysfunction. And that's all I got. I did. Good on the Lord.

LA:

You're no you're good. It was good. All right. Well, to close it out, we got a quote between Dean and Bobby. So this is from when Dean was coming around the corner when he was trying to get into the poker game. And Bobby rolled out and Dean says, how'd you get here so fast?

Berly:

Bobby said, brains Trump's legs apparently. Cheers. Thank you for listening to denim wrapped nightmares.
